My last post was all about what went right at the first Open Shoot I hosted last week at Chez Bushwick. This post is about what I could have done better, and some goals for the next Open Shoot on December 11.
First, communication. I’ve assisted my friend Donnie (check out his stuff at Donnie Miller dot com), a pro based here in New York, and when he’s shooting he keeps up a steady flow of communication, reinforcement, and guidance for the subject. I could have given my dancers more feedback and direction without sacrificing the improvisational form of the shoot. The next time, I’ll know better what I want (and what makes them look their best) and be able to ask for it.
Second, one strobe isn’t always enough!
I was shooting a one-strobe set-up, and for a single dancer it was plenty. I like the contrasty, spartan look it produced. I wasn’t, however, satisfied with my ensemble shots. With more than one dancer, the strobe couldn’t cover enough area and the fall-off meant that one person would be over-exposed while the others faded into the gloom. Lesson: buy more gear. I can live with that.
Third, I struggled with some of the more challenging floor movements. Paradoxically, it’s easier to light a dancer flying through the air than one doing a complex movement on the ground. This will come with more practice.
And finally, I’d like to bring a tighter, more disciplined format to the next shoot. I really enjoyed the loose, flowing mood last Friday, but I made my dancers repeat some sequences more than I should have. My goal is to get it right the first time. Or the third. Or the fifth. But not more than that. This will help me focus and keep them fresh for difficult jumps and phrases.
All in all, a lot of fun and a good learning experience. I’m looking forward to the next Open Shoot in December.
